THE THREE LITTLE KITTENS NURSERY RHYME
And soon ate up the pie.
"Oh, mother dear,
We greatly fear
Our mittens we have soiled."
"What! soiled your mittens, you naughty kittens!"
Then they began to sigh,
"Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow."
Then they began to sigh.
The three little kittens they washed their mittens,
And hung them out to dry;
"Oh! mother dear,
Do you not hear,
Our mittens we have washed?"
"What! washed your mittens, then youre good kittens,
But I smell a rat close by."
"Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow.
We smell a rat close by."

Bad Kitty Meets the Baby

The neighborhood cats disagree. Theyre convinced Baby is actually a cat and hold the Pussycat Olympics to celebrate her arrival. The cats compete in the STARE-AT-YOURSELF-IN-A-MIRROR-UNTIL-YOU-GET-BORED competition, the BABBLING-ON-AND-ON-WITHOUT-STOPPING event, the WHO-CAN-CREATE-THE-BIGGEST-STINK event, and THE-EATING-CONTEST. Baby is the undisputed champion in all four, causing Bad Kitty to have a fit of epic proportions. What will it take for Bad Kitty to accept her new nemesis?
Bruels maniacal black-and-white illustrations go hand-in-hand with the texts wackiness, adding extra bits of fun to compliment the story. Uncle Murrays Fun Facts return and readers (including this one) will learn why cats are experts at climbing trees but not getting back down , as well as some hints on how to teach a cat tricks. Good luck with that one. The only trick my two cats have learned is to come at the sound of a cat food can popping open.
Bad Kitty Meets the Baby is the best in the series, in my humble opinion. Cant wait to see what Bad Kittys next adventure will be.

The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories

Reviews of The Bippolo Seed rave about how wonderful the stories are. So maybe its me. And I didnt find them charmless, not at all. But when compared to his later work, they fall short. The stories have many of his trademarks--catchy rhymes, wacky names, zany humor, rollicking illustrations. Whats different are the plots. The storylines, each of which begins with an outrageous premise, take the reader to the edge of the cliff, and then stall. Some of the endings are downright unsatisfactory.
Take "Tadd and Todd". The two are twins, "and they were alike as two peas in a pod." Then one day Tadd dares to differenciate himself from his brother. No matter what he does, though, Todd copies him. The plot advances in typical Seussian fashion, ending with the pair facing each on stilts both in outrageous costumes. Todd tells Tadd that he cant win. No matter what he does "youll never look different, whatever you do." Surprisingly, Tadd accepts this and gives up his quest to be unique. Im sure Seuss meant the message to be: Accept yourself for who you are. Yet Tadd doesnt come to this realization on his own. His brother forces it on him. More importantly, why shouldnt a twin be unique? I was left wondering how the later Seuss would have resolved this tale. Not so tamely, I think.
"The Bippolo Seed" is the strongest story in the bunch. A duck finds a seed that will grant him a wish when planted. At first the duck is content to wish for enough duck food to feed himself for a week. Then a cat wanders by and convinces the duck to up the ante. Before long, the greedy pair are padding the wish with everything they can imagine wanting. Before they can plant the seed, it slips from the ducks grasp and lands in a nearby river. Greed gets its comeuppance.
Dont get me wrong. This collection will amuse fans of Dr. Seuss. Just dont expect the buried treasure promised by Charles D. Cohen, the Seussian scholar who wrote the introduction. I find it telling that its written for adult aficionados and not children, the ones the good doctor wrote the stories for in the first place.

A Splash of Red The Life and Art of Horace Pippin

Bryant does a superb job of getting at the essence of Horace Pippin, a self-taught artist who, after being wounded during WWI, reinvented himself as a painter. Pippins early love of art, his thrill of winning an art contest as a boy, and his determination not to give up are dramatically told in clean, vigorous prose. Particularly interesting is that nowhere in this bio does Bryant mention that Pippin is a black man. Although obvious from the art, Pippins standing as an determined artist is whats stressed, not his color.
Sweet more than holds up her share of the partnership. Her illustrations mimic Pippins folksy style, yet she brings her own sensibilities to the mix. Sweet includes Pippins quotes into her artwork and she uses a combination of watercolor, gouache, and collage to obtain her effects.
The books back matter includes a historical note that gives a straightforward account of Pippins life. Theres also a list of resources (and a website) for readers whod like more information. Highly recommended.

Giant Human Skeleton Discovered on the Shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago

New Ulm Review, September 12, 1900
The skeleton of a giant, who, when he walked the shores of Lake Michigan, stood seven feet and four inches high in his moccasin feet, was discovered in Rogers Park the other day and upon the discovery hinged an afternoons wonderment. Joseph and Charles Everett, boys who live in Ridge Boulevard near Pratt Avenue, made the find and reported it at the Rogers Park police station. Dr. John Klein, one of the searching party, declared that the skeleton was that of an Indian chief. Further search, among other things, disclosed a copper knife, arrowheads, a quantity of gold and a moccasin. The skeleton was taken in the patrol wagon to the Rogers Park police station. Later it was given to Dr, Klein. The doctor will mount the skeleton and send it to Leipsic University.

Nephilim Gematria Numerology and the Washington Monument 555 and 666
The two core numbers of Gematria are 666 for the Sun Father and 1080 for the Lunar or Earth Mother. The ancient religions dictated that their be a balance between the Sun and the Earth. This was called "The Sacred Marriage of Opposites.Numerologically this was represented by the number 555.5. 555.5 x pi equals 1746, which is the sum total of 666 + 1080.

Early Mason utilized the Gematria numerology codex in laying out Washington D.C. and its buildings. The most iconic of these buildings is the Washington Monument that is 555 feet tall. 20% of the building is underground, which is 111 feet. 555 + 111 = 666. 555 X 12 (inches) 6660 inches.

Accessing Tumblr on the iPad
I find blogging a particularly good activity for boys. Boys do not always reflect naturally and this is a good habit for them to develop. From my experiences many girls develop better language skills and an emotional intelligence at an earlier age and find blogging a natural extension of their work.
I have had students resist using tumblr and then within a month or two be using it daily - without any prompting from me. One in particular now posts so often that I struggle to keep up. I do love it when students get so passionate.
Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. You can post text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos, from your iPad, phone, desktop, email, or wherever you happen to be. You can customize everything, and change it as often as you like. I have never seen two of my students have the same theme.
So what apps are available to access Tumblr on the iPad:

The Strangest Camouflage in the World

Insects typically do not stand out. Something to do with it being their one way ticket to certain extinction, generally. A fact that just adds to the mystique of the extremely rare pink katydid.
What is perhaps strangest about this species is where they are turning up; the majority of pink katydid images are attributed to the most untropical places such as Osaka and the American Midwest. Speculation is that their unusual color is caused by the genetic condition erythrism, which denotes an unusual red pigmentation – if you’ve seen the ginger kids episode of South Park, you’ll understand.

Though remarkably pretty and startling, one must wonder just what purpose this color scheme serves. It’s certainly not the best camouflage, not in the places they are being found, so must surely result in untimely death more often than not. It also makes them seem less threatening, unless their sparring partners have a penchant for pink. And katydids aren’t exactly the bug world’s equivalent of grizzly bears to begin with, so it’s a wonder what nature was thinking when she came up with this one.

Beautiful textbook comes to the iPad The Professional Chef
Master the Skills for a Cooking Career - The Professional Chef from Inkling on Vimeo.
Inkling has teamed up with The Culinary Institute of America to rethink the classic cooking textbook, The Professional Chef, for the digital age. Their version is more than just a simple ebook... it incorporates videos, search, bookmarks, intelligent navigation, and stunning photos. It even adds social networking, that allows you to view and share notes written into the margins.
The social networking aspect of some of these textbooks is what will really extend the learning outside the classroom. The Professional Chef not only allow you to record your own notes but allows you to view the notes of others - this would be a great way to connect with professionals in the industry. We already see hundreds of talented and enthusiastic experts connecting with classrooms all round the world. This is a simple way to link the conversations back to the syllabus - meeting specific outcomes.
This concept is one that is also very easy to transfer to other subject areas. In a way every time one of these eTextbooks is published it means the next one is easier. As an Art Teacher I can see the possibilities of similar coding being used for Visual Arts, Maths, Science, English the whole range of subjects - each with videos, interactive graphs and manipulative interactives.

The Evolution of the Lab Coat

iDevices controlling robots in the Classroom
We recently purchased both the Sphero and the iConCopter and have used both to good effect - although the iConCopter was a personal purchase. I thought it might be handy to have a look at some of the suitable options available. Obviously because of the costs these are items that may need to be planned for in the budget. They may not be appropriate as a whole class set but rather as two or three of one or more of these options that can then be used as kits for special projects or specific units of work.
The Sphero and Tankbot would be good to use with Maths, setting out the steps required to get through a maze - especially with the drawing feature in the Sphero.
Let me know if you are using any other appropriate devices that we have not mentioned here.
Sphero: $79.00 AU

You can control Sphero wirelessly from any of your iOS devices or you can use Sphero as a controller for on-screen games. The device has been engineered in such a way to encourage developers to make games for the device. The intuitive controls are easy for all ages to learn once they download the free Sphero app. Sphero can be used on wood or tile floors, sidewalks, carpet making it one of the most versatile app controlled gadgets for use in schools. I especially like the feature that allows students to draw a track that Sphero then follows.

iWheels Micro Robot: $24.00 AU
Presenting the i-Wheels Micro Robot. This is a unique design for a remote controlled device. The robot has been constructed in such a way that it can not fall over even with just two wheels. Not only does the iWheel come in four super bright colours but it is also controlled by any of your iDevices using the "i-Robot" app from App Store. It looks very easy to control, allowing you to go forward / backward, turn left / right, rotate CW / CCW. Like a lot of these robots, the learning curve may be steep for the adults in the class. Great for mazes or maneuvering over a set track.

iPhone Controlled Insects: $33.00 AU

These six legged robots are also made for HeliPal.com and happens to use the same app as the iWheels micro robot. Inspired by the movement and characteristics of an insect, the insect-like legs are manipulated by the internal structure inside and powered by a small rechargeable battery. Charge your Bug via the included USB cable and start controlling it using your iPhone, iPad or iPod. The IR transmitter allows you to control the bug up to a distance of 6 meters.
Tankbot: $33.00 AU

In addition to the autonomous maze-solving mode, the toy can be set to free-roaming, acting under its own direction, as well as controller mode under the direction of an iOS or Andriod app. Each unit has a retractable USB charger built right into the body of the product, meaning no additional batteries are required. The company says that 40 minutes of charging will yield about 15 minutes of play time. The companion app allows users to control the unit using a virtual "joystick".

Romo: $195.00 AU including shipping

By combining smartphones with a mobile base, they have created robots that do awesome things (telepresence, autonomous navigation, machine vision). Because software for Romo is distributed through the Apple App Store users download new behaviors and personalities for their robots at the click of a button. Anyone can build and distribute new apps for Romo using the Romotive SDK. This is being actively encouraged by the manufacturers. I also like that this was a Kickstarter project.
ParrotARDrone: $350 AU

This is a bit over the top but easily fits into the notion of a iPhone control device. The AR.Drone 2.0 remote-control quadricopter combines the best of many worlds, including modeling, video gaming and augmented reality. The AR.Drone 2.0 is remote-controlled by an iPhone or iPad and features a number of sensors, including a high-definition front camera, vertical camera, an ultrasound altimeter and absolute control mode. With the AR Drone 2.0, you can now record video and take pictures while in-flight and directly share them on Youtube and Picasa. You can also use the AR.Drone in video games, such as AR.Race, a one or two-player game using an obstacle course.

Studying the Human Bodys Anatomy For Human Anatomy Students amp Educators
HUMAN ANATOMY:
In reality there are some things that you will be studying in the human anatomy that are sort of like a warm up to the topic. These are important because they are your general starting points. An example of this is anatomy sections, or terms of position and direction. They all have to do with your human anatomy studies, but there are sort of a side line of the main topic.
Studying the Human Bodys Anatomy - For Human Anatomy Students & Educators
Yet you must understand them in order to enter into your studies. A good example of this is the body cells. You cant categorize these into one part or organ because the entire body is made up of cells. So before you can delve into the deeper workings of the body, you must study the basics first.
You obviously entered the study of human anatomy because it intrigues you to the point where you want to know all about it. This is most probably because you intend to utilize it in some form of profession, such as a Doctor, Nurse or even a Para medic. This means that you are interested and enjoy the field. That is the first step into being successful in your studies. It is much easier to learn something if you have a keen interest in it, because you will retain more of the facts that you are learning. A word of warning, know when to take breaks from your studies. If you become frustrated too often, and for long periods of time, you could lose your interest because of this. Then your studies will suffer.
As we mentioned ,you need to know all about a cell. Now heres where it gets interesting because there are different shapes of cells, and each shape has a name. You have probably heard the term , dna. Well this is it. Everybody has unique cells, and its that uniqueness in the cell that makes up your dna.
You are really going to get excited when you see a cell under a microscope and know by the shape of it what part of the body it came from. To know this you have to learn how to identify them. As you read about them in your text book ,draw a picture of them in a column. In another column next to them write the name of what the cell is. Now leave a large 3rd column. Here you can write notes about that particular cell each time you come across information relating to them. Once again you have a good block of information. Studying in blocks is a perfect way to learn.
When you get to the point of studying an individual cell and all its components ,draw a large cell on a piece of paper , with the front of the cell cut off so you can see the inside of the cell. Now as you learn about each part of what that cell is made up of, draw it on the cell and color it. Now put the details about that part in a block of text, under the cell. Border the block of text in the same color you used on the part in the cell. You will now be able to read your notes, see the color, and quickly reference where it is in the cell. Using the colors is helping you to visualize and link information.
